Recently Harry released his solo debut single Sign Of The Times. With that he is 4th member (if you count Zayn Malik) of One Direction to release solo material. Sign Of The Times is a beautiful piano driven ballad. The song has often been compared to David Bowie, which is not that hard to hear. Yet he didn't copy anything and managed to come out with something truly original. The song is almost 6 minutes long, which is really long for a song that is intended for pop radio. Harry has already proven himself to be an amazing songwriter in One Direction, but once again proves himself on this song. "You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky" is one of my favorite lines in the song.
With his debut Harry surprised a lot of people outside the fandom, who only knew him as "Harry Styles from One Direction". So naturally there are a lot of "I'm not a fan of One Direction, but I love Harry Styles his news song" type comments. Which is a bit of a shame if you listen to what One Direction have actually come up with so far, especially on their last two albums. I already once wrote a whole article called "10 One Direction songs you should hear". This listed 10 amazing 1D songs that most people have no clue about. In the spirit of Harry's solo music I wanted to share one more song that I didn't share in that article which was written by Harry.
Olivia is a song from One Direction's most recent album Made In The A.M. The song feels like a Beatles song when you listen to it. Even though it sounds like a very fun song, the lyrics are quite serious and beautiful actually. For example "This isn't the stain of a red wine, I'm bleeding love". That could easily have been a line from Shakespeare if you didn't have the context. People often remember One Direction and it's members from their early songs, such as What Makes You Beautiful. Combine that with them being put together on X Factor and many of their fans being young and female and you have created the recipe for snobbery. Pretentious music listeners who claim to listen to "serious music" will not even give them the benefit of the doubt. What people don't realize is that these boys have grown up into 20 something year old men. Their fans grew up as well, those girls who were once 14 when One Direction started out are now 21 years old
Funny thing is that The Beatles are now considered serious music. Yet their core group of fans were once young teenage girls. But people like to forget about that and pretend it never happened. Let's just hope One Direction don't have to break up before getting to that status. Because despite what the media seems to report, One Direction haven't broken up at all. They're just simply taking a break and doing their own thing. Several of the guys have spoken about it on multiple occasions and said they are planning to come back. It would be about the time the media started to understand that as well.
Now back to Harry's solo music. Recently he was a guest on Saturday Night Live, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Besides performing his single Sign Of The Times, he also performed a new song called Ever Since New York. To the surprise and excitement of everyone, he even played the guitar on this song. Ever Since New York is a more folk like sounding track with great harmonies. Opposite to Sign Of The Times, which is piano driven, this song is definitely guitar driven, as you can tell from the video. The rhythm vaguely reminds me of Fleetwood Mac and even the One Direction song Ready To Run.
Harry's debut album will be out May 12. It's clear Harry is very much doing his own thing and is not just following the current pop trend. Personally I am very excited to hear the full album. I can't wait to hear what Harry has in store for us
